JONESBORO: Saturday, July 23rd at 10:00 A.M. in the Old Fire Station on Mill Street the Jonesboro Farmers Market, in conjunction with the Clayton County Extension Office and Master Gardeners, are sponsoring a free Master Gardener Program about “Poisonous Plants”. We live side by side with common plants that are poisonous, which we use for decoration and to add value to the landscape. Master Gardener Cliff Pauling will identify and discuss these plants and categorize them together with remedies for misuse of them. THOMASVILLE, GA: Birdsong Nature Center presents Gardening for Butterflies Saturday, July 23 10AM to Noon. Janeen Langley has had a passion for butterflies and butterfly gardening since the early 90’s. Her own garden has been her classroom and she has learned how to attract butterflies with the kinds of plants needed by all stages of a butterfly’s life cycle. Join us for a hands-on workshop to get you started on creating your own butterfly garden. Janeen will show photographs of some of the best nectar and larval food plants and then we will visit the Birdsong Butterfly Garden for on-site instruction. Janeen will also teach you how to raise these beautiful and valuable pollinators from egg to adult. $8 Friends $12, non-members, children half-price. RESERVATIONS PLEASE. GREENSBORO: Lunchbag Lectures The Greene County Master Gardeners are proud to present Dr. George Boyhan, Vegetable Specialist for the UGA Department of Horticulture on July 28th @ 11:30 am. Dr. Boyhan will be discussing Organic Vegetable Gardening. Weed control, fertilization, disease control, insect control and tips for switching to organics are some of the topics on the agenda. Come and join us for the 4th in our “Lunchbag Lecture Series” at the Greene County Extension Office located at 1180 C. Weldon Smith Dr. (next to the Driver License office). Sandwich, chips and a drink are only $6.00 and are provided by the Master Gardeners. The seminar is free to all. While at the Extension Office check our demonstration vegetable garden. He explains that Urban Forestry is the discipline of caring for the trees that we work, live, and play among every day and that our urban forests are becoming more and more valued and are receiving the attention they deserve. He will show us how to improve and grow the canopy of our trees starting with taking a proper inventory of what we have. Come find out what is going on statewide and what you can do on the scale of your own urban forest. Aaron Poulsen comes to us with a background in retail garden centers, public gardens, estate gardening, grounds management, and horticulture education. Aaron has been the Horticulture Program Director at Gwinnett Technical College since April of 2009. He is a Horticulturist, Georgia Certified Landscape Professional, Georgia Certified Plant Professional, and a Certified Irrigation Contractor. Come join us and learn more about our trees. PERRY: The Houston County Extension Office is offering a Fall Vegetable Gardening class to area homeowners who want to know how to double their growing season and enjoy fresh vegetables year round. The class will be taught August 18 from 6:30-8:30 PM in the Extension Office Multipurpose Room located on the top floor of the old courthouse in Perry. Cost for the class is $10 per person. Tim Flanders, UGA Extension agent, will be discussing cool weather crops, planting times, and pests.
