Georgia Master Gardener Program Snippets May 6, 2011

GEORGIA MASTER GARDENERS SCHOLARSHIP at UGA: The Georgia Master Gardener Association, Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization has initiated the establishment of a scholarship on behalf of all Georgia Master Gardeners as part of its commitment to education and in support of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Cooperative Extension. GMGA PROJECT FUNDING GRANTS: Do you have a garden project or activity that educates or serves your community that you would like to initiate? Are there hort projects or ideas that you would like to support? The Georgia Master Gardener Association has set this money aside specifically to fund projects with Georgia Master Gardeners and communities throughout Georgia. For information about the criteria and processes and necessary forms go the GMGA website www.georgiamastergardeners.org, contact your GMGA District Director or Judy Mitchell at judithandcompany@comcast.net . Haste is in order, as the applications must be postmarked June 15, 2011.

JONESBORO: Clayton County Master Gardener Plant Sale Saturday, May 7, 2011 8:00 A.M to 2:00 PM Jonesboro First United Methodist Church, 142 South Main Street, Jonesboro, Georgia 30236. Healthy, beautiful plants at great prices; Plants of all kinds offered by Master Gardeners themselves; Advice on your purchases provided by Clayton County Master Gardeners; Plenty of free parking at the sale. This annual plant sale is a fund-raising activity of the Clayton County Master Gardener’s. GRIFFIN: Mother’s Day Tea in the Garden UGA Research and Education Garden 121 Ellis Rd, Sunday May 8, 2011 1-4 pm. Free. Bring Mom for a stroll through the garden. This event marks the opening of the Sundays in the Garden. The Demonstration Garden will be open, weather permitting, 1-4 pm Sunday afternoons through October 23.

NEWNAN: The Backyard Association May 10, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Coweta County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall 275 Pine Road in Newnan. Speaker Cheryle Turner presents “Cuttin' Up and Showin' Out”, the art of creating centerpieces and decorations with fruits and vegetables . The Backyard Association is an educational program sponsored by the Coweta County Master Gardeners. GWINNETT: Master Gardeners – Garden Tour Saturday, May 21st, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Proceeds from the garden tour benefit the community projects of the Gwinnett Master Gardeners. Master Gardeners will be available at each site to answer your questions. General Information: Tickets are $10.00 per person. Tickets may be purchased at any of the tour gardens on the day of the tour. Garden tour will be held rain or shine. CHARLESTON, WV 2011 International Master Gardener Conference. Early bird registration ends June 9 for the October 11 -14 conference in Charleston, West Virginia. After 6/9 the price of the conference will increase to $300, all pre- and post-tours will increase by $40 and all day tours will increase by $10. It's a lovely 8-hour drive or 2-hour flight. For flyers, Charleston Yeager Airport is served several airlines with Delta Connection (non-stop) and US Airways (connecting through Charlotte) being the ones with shortest routes. http://imgc.ext.wvu.edu/

ATHENS: UGA Trial Gardens Public Open House June 25, 2011 8 am-3pm Gardeners who participate in the 2011 Open House will be able to chat with horticulturists as well as have a selection of plants for purchase. All the plants sold will do well in any Southeastern garden. Dr. A. will have his portable mic and he'll be signing books.
