VIRGINIA: Historic Garden Week in Virginia. This spring, visitors will step through the gates of more than 250 of Virginia’s most beautiful gardens, homes and historic landmarks during “America’s Largest Open House,” April 16-23, 2011. Three dozen Historic Garden Week tours present a rich mosaic of some of the country’s finest properties at the peak of Virginia’s springtime color. ATHENS: Starting a New Food Business in Georgia seminar Friday, April 15th, at the Food Science Bldg., UGA Campus, in Athens. The cost is $100.00, which includes lunch, workshop materials and notebook. This one-day seminar is co-sponsored by the UGA Food Science Extension Outreach Program and the UGA Center for AgriBusiness Development, and features speakers from the food industry as well as entrepreneurs who have started their own food businesses. The deadline to register for this workshop is Monday, April 4th - to register online with a credit card, go to the CALENDAR link at www.EFSonline.uga.edu and look for the Starting a New Food Business brochure and online registration links. The brochure has important information about parking and directions. Space is limited to 40, so register early!

ATHENS: Athens Area Master Naturalist Program 2011. The Athens Area Master Naturalist program will be held in April and May on Fridays from 9-4pm in Athens. The classes cover many environmental topics including native plants, birding, human impact, urban forestry, mammals and wildlife, local agriculture, entomology, herpetology, water issues and stream monitoring. The majority of the classes will be held in Athens at Flinchum’s Phoenix but some will be in the Athens area in topic specific locations. The cost of the program is $185 and includes name badge, polo shirt, weekly refreshments, reference materials, certificate and a graduation lunch. The first class is April 2nd and registration is due no later than March 15th. Class size is limited to 25 participants and registration is on a first come, first served basis. STATEWIDE: Registration is now open for Walk Georgia through March 9. Walk Georgia is a program designed to encourage citizens of Georgia to be healthy and active. Other physical activities including gardening can be counted toward mileage as you "walk across Georgia." Individuals or four person teams can participate. COBB: Cobb County Master Gardeners present “Through the Garden Gate 2011” You are invited to stroll through the private gardens of the Cobb County Master Gardeners as well as other featured local gardens, Master Gardening projects, and the Plant Sale and Fair. This rain or shine event is Saturday May 7 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Advance Tickets are $10.00 per person and may be purchased through the Cobb Extension office beginning in March.
