LAWRENCEVILLE: Gwinnett County Master Gardener Meeting February 21st 7pm, speaker Dr. Allan M. Armitage presents Tales from the Garden. Book sale and signing at 5:45: Armitage’s Vines and Climbers and Armitage’s Garden Perennials. Checks and cash accepted-no credit cards. Covered dish dinner at 6:30, bring a dish or dessert to share. Otherwise, come and hear Allan at 7:00 p.m. Join the master story teller for a short tour though the garden where history, fact and fable meet. JASPER: Pickens County 4-H and Master Gardeners 2011 Plant Sale. 36 different varieties of berries, 17 special/unique feature plants for the landscape and over 75 varieties of favorite landscape plants. Orders will be taken through Feb 25th. Plants will be available for pick up on March 12^th in Jasper, GA. GRIFFIN: University of Georgia Horticulture presents: two sessions of How to Prune Your Landscape Like a Pro. February 25, 2011 OR March 4, 2011, 9am - 3pm. Griffin Campus Research Education Garden. $39 check only, no credit cards. Program speakers: UGA Horticulturists Bob Westerfield and Bodie Pennisi. Covered: proper pruning techniques for ornamentals; pruning fruit trees in brief; equipment selection and care in detail; when, where, and how’s of pruning specific plants; techniques for creating a professional looking landscape; pest prevention through proper pruning procedures. Indoor lectures and outside hands-on demonstrations; dress warmly for the outside portion. Pesticide credit in category 21 and 24 applied for. Refreshments and lunch are included in program. ATHENS: State Botanical Garden: Organic Gardening: A Primer on Growing Herbs and Vegetables. Sunday, March 6, 2011 2 – 4pm. Members $18; non-members $20. Barbara Baker, The Gourmet Gardener and author of Gardening for Health: The 12 Most Important Fruits and Vegetable for Your Organic Garden. Participants will learn the basics of organic soil building, how to propagate herbs and make newspaper pots. Each participant will receive a copy of Container Gardening for Health: the 12 Most Important Fruits and Vegetable for Your Organic Garden. NATIONWIDE: Mantis Awards. In partnership with Mantis, the National Gardening Association (NGA) will select 25 programs to each receive a Mantis Tiller/Cultivator with border/edger and kickstand, and their choice of gas-powered, 2-cycle engine or electric motor (a value of $349). Mantis and NGA welcome applications from all nonprofits. Past winners include community gardens, schools, ministries, colleges, master gardening groups, and hospices. In addition to the application, candidates are asked to send a photo of the garden and a diagram of garden layout and dimensions. ATHENS: ‘Plantapalooza’! Friends of the State Botanical Garden Spring Plant Sale & Trial Gardens Plant sales Saturday, April 9, 8am - 2pm. The State Botanical Garden of Georgia and The Trial Gardens at UGA combine spring plant sales in Athens. A different assortment of garden plants will be available at each of these locations at the same time, but both will have many horticulturists, volunteers and Master Gardeners on hand to help people with their plant selections. Georgia Gold Medal Plants, native plants, as well as an assortment of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs and more. FAYETTEVILLE: The Fayette Master Gardener Association 3rd Annual Plant Sale and Demonstrations Saturday, April 30, 2011. 8:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Fayette County Administration Complex.
