Washington, GA Fall Art Fest Sponsored by the Washington-Wilkes Arts Foundation. World-renowned topiary artist Pearl Fryar will demonstrate his art at 10 am and 11:30 am on the town square green this Saturday, Nov 6th. Demonstration is free. Friday’s events include 6-9 pm screening of a 'Man Named Pearl' and wine reception $20. UGA Griffin Campus: Landscape Update Friday December 3, 2010 9:00a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Research Education Garden Classroom. $40. Lunch is provided in the program. Designed for the commercial landscaper who wants to increase his or her knowledge of landscape management including site analysis and bed preparation, plant selection both woody and herbaceous, fertilization and irrigation, troubleshooting, as well as landscape equipment selection. Commercial and private pesticide credit has been applied for in category 24 and will be offered. Bob Westerfield and Bodie Pennisi will be the program speakers and are with the University of Georgia Horticulture Department. Registration is required. November is American Diabetes Month In 2007, approximately 700,000 adults aged 18 years and older (10.1% of the Georgia adult population) had been diagnosed with diabetes. For every two persons with diabetes who have been diagnosed, another has not yet been diagnosed. Thus, approximately 350,000 additional adult Georgians are estimated to have undiagnosed diabetes, either type 1 or type 2. Thousands more are at increased risk of getting diabetes because of advancing age, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits, and insufficient physical activity; many of these behavioral risk factors are modifiable. (GA Department of Human Resources, Division of Public Health) As Master Gardeners you can help yourself and others in your community be more healthy. Encouraging people to garden can help contribute to a healthier lifestyle and may help reduce diabetes in your community.
