GREENSBORO: The Lunchbag Landscape Series presents “Composting: Bins of Gold”, a free program on the simple steps and advantages of composting for the back yard garden, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 from 11:30 to 1 pm. Dr. George Boyhan, UGA Professor and horticulture expert, will speak at the Greene County Cooperative Extension Building, 1180 Weldon Smith Drive in Greensboro. Participants are invited to bring a lunch or buy one at the lecture. Lunch consists of a Sub sandwich (Publix), chips, a drink and a brownie. The cost is $6.00. ATHENS: “An Evening in the Gardens” presented by the UGA Trial Gardens. Thursday, September 29th, 2011 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the Trial Gardens will be hosting an evening of wine and hors d’oeuvres, featuring live jazz by “Dial Indicators,” guided tours by Dr. Allan Armitage, and a book sale and signing. JONESBORO: Jonesboro Farmers Market is still open on Tuesdays from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. and Saturdays from 8:00 A.M. until Noon. As long as the local growers keep producing we will be open. Did you know that most of the Farmers Market produce is picked ripe and sold that day, you can meet the farmers who grow your food, ask when it was picked, how it was grown, and ways to prepare it? Also, Farmers Markets put more money in the farmers pockets. Commercial farmers get only a percentage of every dollar’s worth of produce sold in supermarkets. STATEWIDE: The Georgia Master Gardener Association needs your help in finding a Ways and Means Committee Chair. Please help them find the right volunteer for this important position. This committee is charged with exploring ways to ensure adequate resources for GMGA through membership, donations, gifts and sponsorships. Specifically, to develop a partnership or sponsors program to generate revenue to support educational programming and general operations, increase membership, develop a plan to fully fund the Georgia Master Gardener Scholarship, create a program of member benefits through relationships with retail outlets, public and private gardens, and other garden establishments, and promote sales of GMGA merchandise and attendance at the annual conference.
